20 Meditation Tips For You:

 

People often ask me what books I recommend for beginners to meditation.  In fact, it happened to me just this morning on my train journey!

My recommendation is that people start their meditation journey with guidance from an experienced meditation teacher.  In my experience (as a meditator and as a teacher of meditation) it is best to ‘experience meditation’ rather than read about it.

There are a multitude of ways to ‘experience’ meditation now.  There are various online courses, in person classes, events, webinars, etc.  The important thing is to get guidance.

And by ‘guidance’, I mean finding someone who will actually explain the concepts of meditation to you.   Preferably an interactive process so that you can get clarification on what you are doing and experiencing.  This will help you build momentum and become confident in your practise.  There is nothing worse than wondering during meditation ‘am I actually doing this right?’

Guided meditations are a great tool to support your practice, but I don’t recommend using them until you are comfortable in your own meditation practice.  I see too many people using them as a crutch because they don’t want to do the hard work themselves.

Another key meditation tip is to find someone who resonates with you.  What works for one person may not work for you.  Go with your gut when choosing your teacher.

In all honesty, I don’t recommend a lot of books on ‘learning to meditate’ because I haven’t found one that I really value.  That being said, I recommend many books for those at more of an advanced stage.  So if that is you – ask away!

I do however recommend the following article.  There are a number of good meditation tips within the list of 20.  The one area I dispute is in point one, where they suggest meditating 1 – 2 times per day.  I would suggest this as an ideal.  This is something I aim for myself each day.  However, it is not realistic for most people – especially at the beginning.

For the first number of years, I meditated 3 to 4 times per week.  I can tell you that this made a massive positive impact on my life.  So set the intention now to meditate 3 to 4 times this week.
