Have you ever experienced discomfort while meditating?
Finding a comfortable position while meditating is important, especially when you are practicing for long periods of time.
Of course, uncomfortable feelings will arise no matter what position you choose, but it is important to limit the distraction of physical discomfort and take care that your meditation posture is correct.
I recently found a great solution to this problem. I had seen the ‘buttafly cushion’ online but was hesitant to purchase it without trying it out. Luckily, I had the opportunity to give it a try for myself when I met the owner and designer of the product, Louise James, at the yoga show recently.
As an experienced Musculoskeletal Chartered Physiotherapist and Yoga Teacher, Louise created the product specifically for yoga and meditation training.
I have been using the cushion for about 2 weeks now and really love it. It is simple, lightweight and adjustable too (if you purchase a second one so you can adjust the height).
The main benefits include:
- Mobility. I need to take my meditation cushion with me since I teach in multiple locations. This is the most lightweight and small cushion i have yet encountered – perfect if you want to bring it to a class or attend a long term mediation retreat!
- Comfort. I can sit cross legged on this cushion for 30 minutes with ease. And the great thing is that you know it has been designed with good posture in mind, so you don’t have to keep adjusting.
In my classes I talk of the importance of trying new meditation postures, and often using an apparatus can be beneficial to improving your posture. One of my favourites is still using a meditation bench. However, these are sometimes difficult to find and it needs to be the right size for you.
The ‘buttafly’ is a fantastic apparatus and I highly recommend it to improve your meditation posture.
